There was a brief period of time where Ben was obsessed with watching House of Cards on Netflix. It was one of those things where he started getting real life confused with Netflix world. Kind of like the time I started seeing members of the Braverman family (from Parenthood) in Wal-Mart. This would really become apparent when we watched the news together. He sometimes would forget Frank Underwood wasn't president and the U.S wasn't rampant with greed and corruption. Although it was easy for me to remind him that Obama was in fact president at the time, it was hard for me to clear up the greed and corruption part.
Fast forward to now. We have since gotten rid of Netflix, and House of Cards is no more. Ben's brain has had time to return from the Upside Down World (really, we really did get rid of Netflix), and now when we watch the news together all we hear is, "Russia, Russia, Russia, blah, blah, blah." I think we started keeping track SEVEN weeks ago, about what would be the first headline we hear each morning (on different outlets) and it has been Russia. You would think after seven weeks we would "get it", but us simple folk are still confused.
And NOW it is "THE MEMO". I haven't turned the news on yet this morning, but, its going to be "THE MEMO". Since I have so few talents in life, my hobbies are limited, and listening to, and reading the news is one of my main things everyday. It's been driving me batty that I don't understand the names of the people, what they do, who they are, and what is the big deal with Russia and now, THE MEMO. My mom (the only other person in the world who watches so much news it's worrisome) told me to blog about THE MEMO. And I mostly try to listen to my mom, but I can't write about what I don't understand. Lucky for me, I had a long night alone last night, and was able to get up early this morning. I read and read. I read THE MEMO. I looked up the names of the people involved. I even googled "Understanding the Russia situation for dummies." And I hope you are really excited, because I think I am ready to break this thing down for you Valley Girl style. I am fully prepared to recieve probably one like on this blog article (the one my mom gives me) because I am sure 95% of you have better things to do and more exciting things you care about on a Saturday. However, my day is made because I finally "get it" a little bit and watching the news doesn't sound like lisetning to another language. Disclaimer: I respect you whatever political party affiliation you have. It is not my purpose here to offend anyone on either political side. My purpose in writing this is so tired parents like myself don't sound stupid when we don't know what the Russia investigation and MEMO is about. This is truly my fact findings on this crazy drama which should really be made for Netflix...because I would renew our subscription.
Ready? Here we go.
Once upon a time, some Democrats and Hillary Clinton hired a spy guy to come up with a nasty report on Donald Trump (the fancy word you will hear is Dossier, that just means "report" but Fancy Nancy would be thrilled we are all saying "Dossier"). The spy guy (Christopher Steele) came up with one that is all false. Then, that was used by the FBI to go the FISA Courts. The FISA court (The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court) is a court that is rarely used, but is used to spy on other Americans. It can only be used, if like, you have proof that we really need to do this because spying on Americans is just wrong. So you are NOT supposed to use the spy court unless its because REALLY bad people are a threat to us as a society. The Obama administration and the FBI used this report even though they knew it was fake to go to the FISA court so they could get permission to spy on the Trump people. So, this is all wrong because it is illegal. You should care about this because the FBI is supposed to be non-partisan (that means they are not supposed to be involved in politics,they are just here to serve ALL American peoples regardless of your political stance) but it shows that the majority of the FBI did not want Trump as president, and were working against him. You can even read their text messages talking about their "back up plan" if Trump was elected. Have you heard about Peter and Lisa? Peter and Lisa were caught passing notes that were bad. I don't think Peter and Lisa get to work at the FBI anymore. This is the part where half of my Facebook friends say, "well that's Okay because Trump is an idiot and nobody wants him for president". But let's put that aside for a moment. What happens when the FBI isn't rooting for your candidate someday? Do you really want that to happen? The FBI is here to serve all people as the most highly regarded service, but now they broke the law. And it leaves people feeling like they can't trust the FBI. For instance; the FBI could decide it doesn't like the Danya Dahlin blog, so they will just write up a false report, and go to the FISA court and get permission to spy on me and bring me down by releasing tapes of me screaming at my kids and nagging on my husband.
But, you are still thinking, yeah, so explain all this Russia talk. The Russia investigation says the Russians tried to sway the elections in favor of Donald Trump. This is bad because Putin is a bad guy (Putin is in charge of Russia...come on people, you knew that right?) We don't want foreign nations interfering with our elections. The dossier (remember, fancy report) was full of innuendos saying that Donald Trumps people met with Russian spy guys. Donald Trump Junior did indeed meet with a beautiful Russian spy (this would probably be episode 4 on the Netflix series)and he knew she was a Russian. She said, "Hey hot stuff, I have some really good dirt on Hillary Clinton, wanna hear it?" So Donald Trump Jr., with his feathers all puffed up, and his deepest voice was like, "heck yeah". But he didn't go alone because I bet his wife would have been mad. So he brought his main peeps for accountability and they went to see what she had to say. Are you ready for it? She had NOTHING interesting to say (Wahh, wahh, wahhhhhhhhh). As disappointing as this episode will be, The beautiful Russian spy was full of baloney. What he did wasn't illegal, but they are trying to make a big case out of it. But it was about nothing and Russia just wants to make us all look like idiots. And they are loving that RUSSIA is the headline every morning here. Why would Russia even care? Because it's like this: all throughout our (modern) history, China and Russia want to bring us down. They want to be number one. They act like they are our friends, but they want to bring us down. It's like nobody wants Tom Brady to win tomorrow because they are so sick of him being number one (not me Tom, I got your back). Russia thinks this whole thing is funny. But in all honesty, we (The U.S) want certain people in certain nations to win elections too. Remember Brexit (That whole thing where the United Kingdom withdrew from the European Union...?) Obama did NOT want that happen, and he helped try to influence that election by saying "certain things". It happens. It's what world leaders have been doing for ages. Nothing is new under the sun. So the Russia investigation is trying to prove that Trump colluded with the Russians to become president. But they have been working on this for ONE YEAR and there is NO PROOF because now THE MEMO tells us this dossier is all lies. Actually, we knew that there was no proof, THE MEMO helps tell us that the FBI used this fake report from the Democrats to start the investigation which is all illlegal.
Some people will say this is like Watergate, but this is worse. Watergate was when the White House had someone steal something, and the FBI came in and helped, and the bad people went to jail (and the bad guys that time were republicans...so...each party obviously gets feisty at times). But Now THE guys who are supposed to be good (THE FBI) were the bad guys, SO WHO CAN WE TRUST?! The FBI ignored that Hillary set up illegal servers. They ignored that she smashed her phones with hammers to hide stuff. It shows that the FBI was pulling for Hillary. And if you are reading this, and love Hillary, you have a right to that vote and opinion. I am cool with that! But ALL OF US can't deny there is some serious, cray cray, shady biz going on.
In conclusion, you should know that the number one law enforcement agency of our country can't chose a side in political elections, because then we are all doomed. Unless they want Jay-Z, because as we already talked about in a previous blog post, that would be cool.
